OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY        YEAR OF THE BELL

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY OCTOBER 17, 2008:               ALL HANDS!

 

            The NYPD U.S. Navy Association Remembrance Day Ceremony will take place on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 13:00 hours at One Police Plaza Auditorium.  We will celebrate the 233rd Birthday of the U.S. Navy and also pay tribute to our Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.  This would be a good time for members who belong to reserve units, Navy units and re-union groups to set aside October17, for your re-unions.  We encourage you to bring along your family and friends.

 

GUest Speaker, rear– ADMIRAL TED n. branch - U.S. Navy:

 

Rear -Admiral Ted Branch (USN) Past Commander USS Nimitz, Director of Information, Planning and Security for Naval Operations will be our guest speaker.

          

STEPHEN DRISCOLL MEMORIAL AWARD:

 

The “Stephen Driscoll Memorial Award” will be presented to Retired NYPD Chief James B. Meehan, Former Chief of Personnel, Chief of Patrol and Chief of the NYC Transit Police Department, in recognition of his many years of distinguished service in the NYPD and the U.S. Navy during WWII.   A well deserved honor!

 

OLDEST SAILOR:

 

This year we will be honoring four WWII Navy Veterans and one Coast Guard Veteran. 

 

WELCOME HOME AND”TOLLING OF THE BELL” CEREMONY:

 

            At Ceremony 2008 we will be welcoming home all our Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.  Let’s give them a big welcome home.  Spread the word!!! Please take time out and pray for the safe return of our members and all others who were activated and are still serving “In Harms Way”.  There also will be the “Tolling of the Bell” Ceremony. Our newly purchased “BELL” will be on display.

 

LT. MICHAEL P. MURPHY (SEAL) USN- KIA-MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPRIENT:

 

            The Medal of Honor Awarded Posthumously to Lt. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) who was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005 will be prominently displayed for all to view and pay their respects.  Michael’s father Daniel, mother Maureen and brother John will be in attendance.

We now have long-sleeved “T”s   and for our Tenth Anniversary we have Challenge Coins.

 

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY LAPEL BELL PINS:

 

            The NYPD U.S. Navy Association will be issuing commemorative LAPEL BELL PINS to all our members attending this year’s ceremony.  Our way of saying “Thanks for your attendance.’’

            We would be most grateful to anyone wishing to sponsor part of the cost of the Commemorative Lapel Bell Pins.  As a Bronze, Silver or Gold donor your name will be entered in our Ceremony 2008 Program.

 

HOW TO GET THERE:

 

            Parking is very difficult around One Police Plaza.  Your best option is public transportation, Express Bus Service, L.I.R.R., Ferry, Car Pool or Subway. We expect a large turnout.  Try to arrive early (0930) hours.  Coffee, bagels and donuts will be available before the ceremony.  Volunteers are needed to set up the auditorium at 0900 hours. 

                                                                                                           

HOW TO ENHANCE OUR REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY:

 

            We urge all members to invite their families, relatives and friends to attend.  We encourage participants to wear their U.S. Navy uniforms, or any other dress service uniform,

if possible. We also ask everyone to wear their medals and campaign ribbons on their outer garments while attending the ceremony.  Be proud: wear your medals and ribbons with pride.  You earned them!  As a final gesture, the organization has arranged for us to gather after the ceremony for a luncheon at St. Andrews Church Hall.  Everyone is welcome.

           

ARMY –NAVY FOOTBALL GAME – SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2008

 

            The Navy Association has purchased 50 tickets to the game in Philadelphia. A bus will transport us to the game.  Tickets are on first come, first serve basis.  The total price will be $110.00 per person, includes tailgate party.  Reserve now!  Freddie Crockett, 718-376-4352.

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first U. S. born saint, canonized in 1975. She was a devoted wife, mother of 5 children, (2 sons served in the U. S. Navy), widowed at 29 years of age.

She was named the Patroness of the United States Sea Services (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine) and Patroness of the State of Maryland.
