It
is with profound sadness that the NYPD US. Navy Association announces the
passing of Charter Member and WWII vet John J. Gowrie on 5/27/2010. John was 87
years of age and retired from the NYPD as a First Grade Detective, after 23
years of service. His grandson Alex Guarino Jr. said his grandfather was very
proud to belong to the NYPD US. Navy Association . For over 10 years he proudly
wore our associations ball cap. John J. Gowrie ,a WWII vet, was a Normandy
Invasion Survivor. On June 6, 1945 John served aboard the USS Anton, a
communications ship that invaded France. For this the French Embassy in 2001
awarded John the “Jubilee Liberty Medal“. The French Counsel General
presented John with this award. John’s funeral was on Wednesday, June 2,
2010 at St. Anthony’s, Nanuet, New York. The NYPD had a honor guard of
8 pallbearers and the NYPD U. S. Navy Association sent 2 NYPD pipers,
Bernie Cummings and Mike Brennan Sr.. Two members of the association
gave John a final farewell, Members Stephen F. Ryan (WWII ) and Bill Burns
(WWII). John’s grandson Alex said it all stating “My Grandfather was very
proud of his experiences ,of which the U. S. Navy and the NYPD played a major
part. He was a true example of a great man and our hero. He will be dearly
missed by all of us.”
